Computer Cooling

Prevent your PC from overheating

A computer cooling system prevents your PC from overheating. Without a proper cooling system, the temperature inside your computer will get too high and the components will be at risk of overheating or even melting, which can significantly reduce their lifespan.

PC cooling systems consist of computer cooling fans located inside the computer case (also called case fans). A case fan draws cool air in from outside and expels warm air from inside the case. These fans are generally 80 mm, 92 mm or 120 mm and are located along each side of the computer case.

In addition to case fans, it is a good idea to have fans for specific individual components that generate a lot of heat, like the CPU. The Central Processing Unit is the brains of your computer and the most heat-intensive component.

CPU fans, GPU (graphics processing unit) fans and hard disk fans are the most common for additional spot-cooling because keeping all of these components cool is essential to the proper functioning of the computer.

High-power computers used for gaming or other resource-intensive programs often require advanced cooling systems such as liquid cooling. The more effective and expensive liquid cooling systems can be used in conjunction with a standard air cooling system.

Must-Have Features

  • Low noise output
  • Compact system
  • High-efficiency cooling

Major Considerations

  • How much does the cooling system cost?
  • Will the purchased cooling system be adequate for my needs?
  • What benefit will an add-on cooling system give me over the built-in case fans?
  • How reputable is the manufacturer of the cooling system?

Top Manufacturers

  • ZEROTherm
  • ThermalTake
  • Apevia
  • CoolerMaster
  • Axpertec

Common Accessories or Add-Ons

  • Spot-cooling fans for the CPU, GPU and/or hard disk
  • System heat monitoring component
  • Heat warning and automatic shutdown component

Price Range

Individual case fans start at as low at $13. You can expect to pay approximately $20 for a good-quality case fan. CPU fans range in price from $25 to $150. Most computer cases come with built-in air cooling systems.

Summary

Prevent your computer from overheating by ensuring that you have an adequate computer cooling system installed. Doing so will prolong the life of your computer and its components and save you money in the end. Even though most computer cases come with built-in cooling systems, you may want to add additional case- and spot-cooling fans to get the best performance from your computer.
