A computer network allows two or more computers to communicate with each other. The most common use of a computer network is to share an Internet connection, but a network can also be used to share files and peripherals like printers and scanners.

There are many different ways to build a network, so it’s definitely worth your time to figure out exactly what you need before you buy anything. The first question you’ll want to ask yourself is whether you want to be able to connect to the Internet wirelessly. If you own a desktop computer that’s set up in a home office, there’s really no reason to go wi-fi. However, if you own a laptop that you want to use throughout your home, then a wireless connection might be the right choice.

Family Use

Gone are the days when computers were the only thing that could connect to the Internet. Today, there’s a good chance that your kids will want to connect with their cell phones and video game consoles. Couple this with the fact that it’s easier than ever to download large files (like movies), and what it all means is that you’re going to need a lot of bandwidth. You’ll want to pick up a cable/DSL broadband router and make sure that your computer is equipped with a quality network card. Trust us, you don’t want to incur the wrath of your kids when your Internet connection is too slow to download the latest movie trailers or music videos.

For the Businessperson

Businesspeople usually travel with laptops, and nearly all laptops sold today are equipped to connect to the Internet anywhere with an available wireless connection (such as Internet cafés, hotels or even in the parking lot next to an office building). To increase your ability to connect to wireless networks, make sure your laptop has a wireless network card with a good antenna and the option to connect a range-extending external antenna.

For the Student

As with businesspeople, many students own laptops, so wireless is the way to go. Most colleges and universities offer wireless Internet service, which allows students to do research and send e-mails from various hot spots on campus.
