HP 1020

Reviews

The Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 1020 is a cheap, low-volume laser printer. It is one of the smallest laser printers available and it best suited for home use.

Pros

The best feature about the LaserJet 1020 is probably the price. It's a very inexpensive printer (it usually sells for around $200). It's also one of the smallest laser printers on the market, which is great if you don't have a lot of space to work with. Despite the low price and small frame, the printer is actually quite efficient. It churns out slightly more than 12 pages of text per minute, which isn't blazing fast but it's more than acceptable. Graphics pages can be printed at a rate of nearly nine per minute.

Cons

The main downside to the LaserJet 1020 is that it isn't really designed to handle constant use. If you are constantly printing things, this may not be the printer for you. New ink cartridges cost a whopping $70 and they are expected to produce only 2000 pages of output before they need to be replaced. Clearly, the 1020 isn't meant for heavy use. Other common complaints include the fact that the printer isn't network-ready, it has a small paper tray (it can hold only 150 sheets at a time) and the pages it prints aren't nearly as sharp as those printed by other (more expensive) laser printers. 1020s have also been known to overheat.

The Gist

The HP LaserJet 1020 is a great printer for your home office, but the truth is that you can probably do better if you're looking for an office printer. The 1020 offers great bang for your buck since it's so cheap, but it's not meant to be a workhorse printer. If you're looking for an office printer, it's worth it to spend a little extra.
