Spyware Software

Protect yourself from Internet spies

Spyware is similar to a computer virus, in that it is a malicious file that installs itself on a computer without the user's permission. Rather than destroying files or hijacking applications, however, it is designed to stay hidden and simply "watch" what you do.

The spyware program collects personal details about you by scanning your files, logging your browser history and even logging your keystrokes to create a user profile. This profile is then used to send your computer pop-up ads that specifically target your interests. Because spyware's ultimate purpose is to try to sell you stuff, it is also sometimes referred to as "adware." More sinister but less common spyware may be used to steal financial information or for identity theft.

The best defense against adware spyware is simply not to download any questionable files. However, an adware blocker is a good precaution. The best spyware removal software takes minimal memory and resources to run and is updated regularly to recognize the latest threats.

Before you go shopping for anti spyware software, though, check your antivirus package. Many antivirus programs come with a spyware remover or adware remover included, so you may already be covered.

Features and Benefits

Spyware software should perform:

  • Scanning: The first thing anti spyware must do is scan your computer at regular intervals, preferably without taking up resources and slowing down your regular applications.
  • Detection: Your anti spyware software will need constant updates to recognize the latest spyware programs.
  • Removal: This can be easier said than done. Lesser-quality spyware removers may not effectively eliminate offending programs.

Top Choices

As adware is an ever-increasing problem, it seems there are countless anti adware software packages to choose from. Here are some recommendations:

  • Spy Sweeper by webroot
  • CounterSpy by Sunbelt Software
  • ZoneAlarm by Check Point
  • Ad-Aware Pro by Lavasoft

Major Considerations

  • How big a problem is spyware for me?
  • How much technical support will I need (manual, tutorial, phone support)?
  • How much of my system resources (memory, processing) can I spare?

Price Range

Most spyware removal software packages cost about $20 to $30 and include a year's worth of updates. After that, you will have to re-subscribe to continue getting updates.

Beware of free adware and spyware software downloads. Some are legitimate but largely useless; many will actually infect your computer with adware.

Summary

Spyware and adware tend to be more of a nuisance than anything else, but they clog up valuable system resources and distract you from your work. That alone makes it worth investing in anti spyware. In the worst case, however, spyware could result in the theft of your identity or banking information. For that reason, every computer, business or personal, should be protected.

Remove AdAware from Startup: Go To Computer/ DoubleClick on Drive C /Double click on Program Files / Scroll down and look for any Adaware or Lavasoft files. Right click and delete them. Reboot. If that does not work, under saerch in windows, enter either Adaware or Lavasoft and see what comes up. If anything comes up, DELETE IT. Excellent Luck. P.S. Download the latest copy of CCleaner and run both the Cleaner and Registry options.
