Router
Sharing an Internet connection
A broadband router, also called a residential gateway or home router, connects a home network of computers to the Internet. A router typically has connectors for the broadband connection and the Ethernet network it is connecting to. It also has a basic processor, flash memory and RAM. A router sits in between a modem and the home network, unless a DSL or cable modem is already built into the router.
Some routers also have wireless capabilities. A wireless router transmits and receives data through specific wavelengths. While most laptops come equipped with wireless capability, most PCs will need an internal card or an external USB adaptor. Though convenient for connecting multiple computers in different rooms of your home, the connection can be easily affected by walls and other obstacles.
Linksys provides a variety of options in their routers and adaptors, from wired to wireless and internal to external. A Linksys router for connecting your home network can be purchased for as low as $40, but the cost can go into the thousands for a service router.
DLink provides the same variety; a DLink router can cost around $30 but can go as high as $300 for an "Xtreme" router, or nearly $500 for routers specialized for small businesses.
