Video Capture
Putting video from other source onto your computer
A video capture card is a type of video capture device that records and plays back video and can even perform further functions such as video editing. Sometimes, a video card may come with video capture capabilities, but often a separate capture card is required. An internal PCI video capture card simply plugs into the PCI slots in a motherboard, and newer PCI Express video capture cards may provide better performance.
Rather than a card, external devices are another option. USB video capture is one method of external video capture; devices connect to the PC through USB 2.0 cables. Other external devices connect through FireWire cables. External devices are also commonly used with laptop computers.
Some camcorders can also be considered video capture devices if they come equipped with input and output devices that can translate analog to digital images and are able to connect to the PC.
Video capture software is also necessary for video capture and allows the recorded material to be burned to a DVD or video CD. Further software can be used for video editing, and some cards even come equipped with editing capabilities, such as dubbing, adding sound, ensuring dialogue matches lip movement and adding titles.
Must-Have Features
- Look into capturing and burning software that comes with the video capture card.
- If you don't mind opening your computer, internal cards are generally better as they are less expensive and have more features.
- If you're looking to record television shows as well, a card that supports both video and television capture is ideal and cuts down the costs.
Major Considerations
- What am I going to be capturing?
- Do I want an internal or an external video capture card?
- Do I need a digital converter?
- What types of inputs and what types of outputs do I require?
