Modem Router

Allowing you to spread your Internet connection around

Modem routers allow you to share an Internet connection over more than one computer in the house. People who have several computers that all need an Internet connection will use a router to "split" the connection to each computer.

The most basic way of doing this is to use a cable modem router, which runs cables from a main modem to about four or five different connections. It works like a cable splitter. However, having a lot of cables taped on your floor can be annoying and certainly doesn't add to the decor, so many people prefer a wireless modem router. This works by plugging the main cable into the wireless modem and then letting a laptop or a wireless card in your PC pick up the signal. Older routers will include a special wireless transmitter that you can plug into a USB port on your computer so that any computer can use a wireless modem router.

When choosing an ADSL modem router or a cable router, make sure you get one that will suit your needs. Remember, you may also need to replace your modem router when you upgrade your computer. Choose one that will cover a variety of operating systems and computers, and you won't have to spend money on another router when the time comes to replace your computer.

Price Range

Depending on the type of router you buy, you can pay anywhere from $30 to $100. Wireless routers, like anything in this category, tend to be slightly more expensive than a wired router. A router that has more features and greater capability may be more expensive, but it will likely last longer and not need to be replaced down the road.

Summary

A modem router splits your Internet connection among a number of computers so that you don't have to get a separate connection for each new computer in your network. You can get a cable or a wireless router, and it will cost you around $50 for a relatively good-quality router. The more capabilities your router has, the longer it will last and the better it will perform.
