The number of times a projector light bulb will need to be replaced over the course of a projector's lifetime depends how much you use it. On average, an LCD projector bulb will last between 1,000 and 2,000 hours, though some can last up to 4,000 hours. A DLP projector bulb can be either a mercury vapor arc or an LED bulb, which is used more commonly in newer projectors. A mercury bulb has an LED that displays when the bulb's life is up.
Both metal halide and halogen bulbs can be used with LCD projectors, though metal halide lamps can last thousands of hours and halogens last only 40 to 70 hours (they also have a slightly yellowish light). However, halogens maintain brightness even when nearing their end, whereas metal halide bulbs lose brightness gradually.
There are things that can be done to extend the life expectancy of your projector bulb. Ventilation can be vital to getting the most out of it. You should let the fan run after the lamp has been turned off, allowing it to cool down. Make sure your projector is located so that air can circulate and prevent it from overheating. Cleanliness is also imperative, and air filters should be cleaned regularly.
