Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Named Game of the Year
RPG Beats out Arkham City, Portal 2
The highly-anticipated and critically acclaimed The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been crowned video game king for 2011. The title was named game of the year at Spike's Video Game Awards, but it wasn't the only winner.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a massive, open-world single-player role playing game, which allows players to create a unique character and wander throughout the massive province of Skyrim. The game features some stunning visuals and voice acting, though it's the title's sheer scope -- players can easily sink 75-plus hours into this one and not complete everything -- that has gamers buzzing.
However, not everyone is pleased with Skyrim's big victory. The game's size has made ironing out all the bugs extremely difficult, and the title’s developer, Bethesda, is struggling to fix the many problems encountered by players. PlayStation 3 (PS3) users are having the most trouble right now, with gamers experiencing considerable slow-down after playing for a few hours' at a time.
Nevertheless, even disgruntled PS3 gamers have had to admit this is one impressive title. And despite its ongoing struggles to fix patches, Bethesda Game Studios picked up the Studio of the Year award.
Also being recognized at the awards ceremony: Portal 2, which received Best PC Game of the Year, and Uncharted 3, which was listed as the Best PS3 Game of the Year. Batman: Arkham City won Best Xbox 360 Game of the Year. All three titles were nominated for overall game of the year, but beaten out by Skyrim.
For those more interested in Nintendo’s systems, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword picked up Wii Game of the Year honors. Best Handheld Game of the Year went to Super Mario 3D Land, available for the Nintendo 3DS.
Best Driving Game went to the Xbox 360 exclusive Forza Motorsport 4, while Best Fighting Game went to the new Mortal Kombat (technically, the ninth game in the series).
Finally, if you're wondering which game the experts believed was the "Best Shooter" of 2011, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 beat out Battlefield 3. And while I wholeheartedly agree with Skyrim's win, I'll have to disagree with that one.
