High-Def TVs Headline Black Friday Deals
Retailers Slash Hundreds from HDTV Prices
The king of this year's Black Friday appears to be the almighty high-definition television. A number of big box electronics stores are offering big savings on big screen TVs.
The main focus for HDTV hunters has been Best Buy, where folks have been lining up for days to get first crack at midnight savings. "I had my tent, my sleeping bag and a book, and I just got in and held down the reins," said New Jersey Black Friday shopper, Isabel Baez. "The main thing is to just have fun. Just enjoy yourself, be early, and don't be stressed if someone is before you in line. You'll get what you want."
In preparation for the event, Best Buy set up porta-potties and police patrolled the area -- on the look-out for line-cutters, no doubt.
Amongst Best Buy's sales is a 42-inch Sharp LCD HDTV for just $199.99 -- hundreds of dollars off the usual retail price. Baez said she'd be buying one, along with a second television, about three tablet computers, and a notebook PC. In all, Baez said she expected to spend $3,000 on Black Friday morning.
Other big Best Buy deals: a 51-inch Samsung plasma HDTV for $498, and a 60-inch Sharp LCD HDTV for $799.
Best Buy wasn't the only retailer offering big bargains. Target's 46-inch Westinghouse LCD HDTV, selling for $298, also led to big line-ups. Those waiting outside Target weren't sitting idle, either. Some, like Clifton, New Jersey’s Jeanette Bessinger, took to their smartphones to find online deals. “I already bought a pot and pan set, and a new curling iron,” Bessinger said. “Shop while you're in line. Everything's free shipping.”
If you're looking for the other big HDTV deals, check out Kmart's $499 50-inch Panasonic 720p plasma. For the really big spenders, Amazon.com is offering a gargantuan 80-inch LED HDTV for $5,500, a price reduction of $1,000.
It's expected that about 152 million people will shop this Black Friday, up about 10 per cent from last year. It would appear Americans aren’t willing to give up their shopping in a troubled economy, only that they’re determined to find the very best deals.
