Modern Warfare 3 Most Anticipated Game This Fall

Call of Duty Shooter More Popular than Battlefield 3

Most holiday seasons come with at least a dozen video game titles that get high reviews from both gamers and critics. Such games generate huge sales for the video game industry, which tends to go into something of a hibernation during the months of January, February and March. This year is no different, with a number of huge games coming out between early October and late December. So, what games are likely to sell the most copies? Neilson has put together a forecast answering that very question.

At the top of Neilson's list is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and that's not much of a surprise. Since the franchise moved to the "modern" format a few years back, gamers have flocked to this first person shooter, which offers extremely high production values, an exciting single player campaign, and, most importantly, a robust online multiplayer system. According to Neilson, 27 per cent of the gamers it interviewed said they were most interested in this release.

That puts Modern Warfare 3 well ahead of the second-most anticipated game, the already available Gears of War 3, by 8 per cent. According to Neilson, 19 per cent of gamers reported being most excited about the third entry into the Gears franchise, which concludes this fall. As mentioned, Gears of War 3 is already available, and has received very positive reviews from critics.

Tied with Gears in second at 19 per cent is Madden NFL 12, always popular amongst hardcore and casual gamers alike. Madden has taken a bit of a hit from critics this year, with many experts finding the gameplay too similar to previous versions. This, of course, is the problem with franchises that get new editions each and every year.

In fourth is Assassin's Creed: Revelations, yet another version of the excellent action-platformer franchise. This is the fourth Assassin's game in just a few years, but unlike Madden this franchise only seems to be getting better. Roughly 17 per cent of Neilson respondents look forward to this one most.

Other notable entries: the new Batman game, Arkham City, got a thumbs up from 15 per cent of gamers, while Nintendo fans look forward to The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (14 per cent). Surprisingly low entries: Modern Warfare 3's main competitor, Battlefield 3 (12 per cent) and open world role playing game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (8 per cent).
