The Ins and Outs of Kindle Unlimited

What is Kindle Unlimited?

Amazon brings a whole bunch of subscription services for reading material. This can make it hard to decide which one is perfect for your specific needs. One service you could give a good look at is Kindle Unlimited.

If you do not know if this service is for you, among all the different services, we will lay out all the pros and cons. We will tell you exactly what Kindle Unlimited is.

How Does it Work?

A Kindle Unlimited subscription gives you access to more than one million Kindle titles. This includes ebooks, audiobooks and magazines. Titles can be read on any Amazon device or the Kindle app. You can take your reading with you wherever you go.

You can also borrow titles as often as you need to with no due dates. So, you can keep your titles as long as you need them. Also, you can borrow up to 10 books at a time, so you will never be bored.

If this is enough to convince you to go ahead and get the service, then let’s see how you can get access to the service.

How to Get Started

To be able to access this service, all you will need is an active Amazon account with a valid credit card linked to it. Make sure you have the one click payment option enabled. To enable this option, all you need to do is:

  • Go to “Your Account” and select “Your Content and Devices.”
  • Select the “Settings” tab.
  • Under the first option “Digital payment settings” you can set up the one click payment.

The great thing is that you do not need to have a Kindle device. You can access it through the Kindle app, which is available on most devices, including iOS, Android, Mac and PC.

For Amazon Prime Members

Unfortunately, Kindle Unlimited is a separate subscription to Amazon Prime. This means you do not have to be an Amazon Prime member to get Kindle Unlimited, but it does not come automatically with Amazon Prime. They have a different borrowing service that is free but exclusive to Prime members in the United States. This is called Prime Reading.

It is similar to Kindle Unlimited but offers a significantly smaller library. Prime Reading offers over 1,000 titles, but that pales in comparison to Kindle Unlimited.

Kindle Unlimited Cost

At $9.99 per month, it is affordable for the bookworms who can go through books faster than the speed of light. It also offers six, 12 or 24-month subscriptions, which is perfect for your loved one who consistently looks for something new to read.

As with almost all subscription services, there is a one-month free trial option just so you can see if it is a perfect fit for you before you take out money on something you will maybe not use.

How to Browse the Library

You can browse the entire catalog. You will find it in the "Departments" menu on the Amazon home page. You can also browse the store as you normally would and the Kindle logo will appear next to titles that are available to borrow with Kindle Unlimited.

You will see a new option with the "Buy now with 1-Click" button and you will also have a "Read for Free" button. Clicking “Read for Free” will allow you to borrow the book through Kindle Unlimited. After you have all your reading material, the titles will be available on all the devices of your choice to enjoy.

How to Return Books

When you are done with this set of books or one of them just was not what you were looking for, you can return your borrowed titles. All you have to do is go to “Your Kindle Unlimited” under “Your Account.”

There you will see a list of “Your Borrowed Items.” This keeps track of how many books you have taken and which ones you still need to read.

Kindle Unlimited Audiobooks

Some of the titles in the library also come with a free audiobook. You will see a little headphone icon next to the Kindle Unlimited logo. If it has the Audiobook logo, you can automatically use the Audiobook version as well. This is perfect for long trips home.

Knowing About the App

It is easy to use the subscription service on the Kindle app. All you have to do is:

  • Select “Kindle Unlimited from the “Discover” tab.
  • From here you can browse, borrow and also "Manage your titles."
  • To borrow a title, select the book and select “Add to Library.”
  • To “Manage your Titles” you can see the list of items you have borrowed and can return them if you want to.

How to Cancel a Subscription

So, it turns out it is not for you or you are a super reader and you have read through the entire library. You can cancel your subscription at any time. When you cancel, you will retain all your benefits until the next billing date. The difference is when canceling a pre-paid subscription, this will be effective immediately and no partial refund will be given.
